The highly anticipated volume in Assouline’s exclusive Ultimate Series, Chinese Art: The Impossible Collection presents 100 works of contemporary art that reveal the social, political, and cultural evolution of a nation on the rise. Carefully curated by Cheng and Dodelande, the 100 works are presented in chronological order, beginning with traditional paintings from the early 20th century and culminating in some of the most avant-garde works by the “new generation” of Chinese artists, whose creations explore and often critique the politics that have defined China’s rapid rise into a new world power. The particular themes and conversations raised by these 100 works are glossed in essays and commentary by three of the world’s foremost experts on Chinese art: Philip Tinari of UCAA in Beijing, Alexandra Munroe of the Guggenheim in New York, and Karen Smith of OCAT Contemporary Art Terminal in Xi’an.

More information

Over the past century, China has experienced a period of growth more rapid and utterly transformative than any other nation in modern history. How can we begin to understand the country that has emerged from such a time of dramatic change? Perhaps the answer lies in Chinese art. That is certainly what renowned art collectors Adrian Cheng and John Dodelande argue in their forthcoming volume, Chinese Art: The Impossible Collection. After all, China’s history as a land of enormous influence stretches back to its dynastic past, and the nation’s art has always been in conversation with its customs.

About the author

Adrian Cheng

Adrian Cheng is a prolific and dedicated collector of contemporary Chinese art, and a powerful force in the global art scene. In 2020, ArtReview magazine included him 12th on its list of the 100 most influential people in the art world. That influence is due in part to his K11 Art Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes emerging artists internationally. Cheng also holds positions at some of the world’s leading art institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Met in New York, and the Royal Academy in London.

About the brand

Assouline, where culture meets luxury It all began in 1993, when Martine and Prosper Assouline found themselves at the La Colombe d'Or hotel in France, one of their most beloved places in the world. As they experienced its beauty together, their curiosity about life and love of books inspired them to make their own tome about the hotel. Prosper took the photos, Martine wrote the text, and La Colombe D'Or became their first book, published in 1994. Today, every Assouline book continues to be created with the same union of talent and passion: Martine's editorial direction and Prosper's creative vision.
