Since time immemorial, monarchs, nobility and aristocracy have longed to spend their leisure time on the water. From Cleopatra’s legendary luxury barge to Her Majesty’s Royal Yacht Britannia, to elegant Jazz Age vessels such as the Nahlin, once chartered by King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, to 1960s Hollywood royalty invited aboard Aristotle Onassis’ Christina O, the world of yachting has always attracted the famous, the jet set and the top 0.1%. But with over three thousand superyachts in the world fleet – not to mention legendary vessels that are sadly no longer in existence – how do we distinguish the crème de la crème of this exclusive breed?

More information

Yachts: The Impossible Collection is an eclectic, curated anthology of vessels, from the 1851 boat that gave its name to the America's Cup, to the J Class racing yachts of the early 20th century, to today's high-tech megayachts, from classics with timeless silhouettes to those that broke the mold with bold design and redefined their era. And with so much attention today on the environment and ocean health, the boating world is changing rapidly, with an ever-increasing pursuit of sustainability. Whether impossible in size, speed, luxurious features or advanced green technology, every vessel in this fantasy marina has transformed the yachting seascape.

As long as there are people with means and blue oceans to explore, there will always be demand for these beautiful, impossible creatures that push the boundaries of technology, luxury and decadence – and new yachts worthy of The Impossible Collection are yet to be built.

About the brand

Assouline, where culture meets luxury It all began in 1993, when Martine and Prosper Assouline found themselves at the La Colombe d'Or hotel in France, one of their most beloved places in the world. As they experienced its beauty together, their curiosity about life and love of books inspired them to make their own tome about the hotel. Prosper took the photos, Martine wrote the text, and La Colombe D'Or became their first book, published in 1994. Today, every Assouline book continues to be created with the same union of talent and passion: Martine's editorial direction and Prosper's creative vision.
