Finnish designer Eero Aarnio, born in 1932, studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki from 1954 to 1957 and started his own practice as an industrial and interior designer in 1962.
Committed to new furniture ideas, he designed the Ball Chair as early as 1963, which was manufactured a few years later. The material (fibreglass) and the shape were completely new to the furniture industry at the time.
In the following years, fiberglass used in boat building became one of Aarnio's favorite materials. Strong and easy to work with, fiberglass allowed Aarnio to design unrestricted ergonomic shapes and new, intriguing ones.
With the Pastil Chair (American Industrial Design Award 1968) and the Tomato Chair he gained an international reputation. These chairs can be used both indoors and outdoors – and they swim! The Pastil Chair also offers a new and extraordinary idea of what a rocking chair is.
