More information

"I have no idea how it happened, but I remember very well the reason why Massimo and I designed the fabric Le farfalle, "The Butterflies", by Poltronova... The idea was to make floral decorations, but crossed with pop decorations, like those of Liechtenstein, which imitated printing designs, creating (in our intention) a contrast between the floral theme and the "pop" theme... In fact, the result was a living fabric, but not as acidic as we expected; Archizoom's "Over-the-Top Generation" was not yet mature..."
[Andrea Branzi]

It only takes a flap of wings to launch the umpteenth version of the chair designed in 1966 to challenge convention. In the butterfly and in the world of the bright sky, polka dots, checks, flowers and stars, the anti-establishment art of American artists such as Liechtenstein and, more generally, Pop Art continues to develop. The butterfly motif, designed by Archizoom in 1968, was an acidic, pop reinterpretation of the floral theme that came from a much more composite tradition, and is now part of Poltronova's emerging catalogue of fabrics.

About the designer

Archizoom Associati

Founded in Florence in 1966 by Andrea Branzi, Gilberto Corretti, Paolo Deganello and Massimo Morozzi, followed in 1968 by Dario and Lucia Bartolini, this group was one of the most authoritative voices of the entire radical architecture movement. Together with Superstudio, they organised the Superarchitettura show in 1966. In 1968, they participated in the 14th Triennale with the Centro di Cospirazione Eclettica project; in 1972, they took part in the exhibition Italy: The New Domestic Landscape at the MoMA in New York, and in 1973 they founded Global Tools together with the main representatives of the radical area.

Between 1966 and 1973 they produced provocative furniture for Poltronova which inaugurated the season of new design: the Superonda and Safari sofas [1966-67], the Sanremo lamp [1968] and the Mies armchair [1969]. The Gazebo series was published in 1968 in the first issue of Ettore Sottsass jr's magazine, "Pianeta Fresco". In parallel to their experimental work in the field of design, Archizoom carried out research on the city, the environment and mass culture which culminated in the major project for a City Without Stops. Archizoom's theoretical research works addressed some themes of the radical movement, notably Branzi's Radical Notes on "Casabella". The group dissolved in 1974.

About the brand

"Poltronova is the radical factory. Poltronova is a historic moment, which is still alive and where many of us still feel at home. Where the glorious and long history of Italian design began among frogs and reeds, before reaching the altars of honour..."
