More information

Spera is part of a series of small mirrors and a photo frame by Superstudio. The series began with the idea of using leftovers from marble processing. A DIY operation, rather than a creation, as the Florence-based group claimed at the time. The careful milling of the irregular piece of marble makes it the precious support for a sheet of methacrylate to be used as a photo frame. Ahead of their time, Ofelia, Spera and Vanitas represent a transformation project capable of giving a new and refined aesthetic to industrial scrap.

About the designer

Superstudio

Superstudio, founded in Florence in 1966 at the Faculty of Architecture, was initially formed by Adolfo Natalini and Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, who were later joined by Roberto Magris [in 1967], Piero Frassinelli [in 1968], Alessandro Magris [in 1970] and Alessandro Poli [from 1970 to 1972]. Superstudio's experimental activity began when it participated in the Superarchitettura [1966] exhibition organised together with Archizoom. From that experience, thanks to the meeting with Poltronova, the Passiflora lamp and the Sofo sofa were born.

Between 1968 and 1969, Design d'invenzione e design d'evasione [Domus 475, 1969], Istogrammi d'architettura [1969] and Monumento continuo were published. Still in 1969, the group participated in the Graz Biennale with the theme Architecture and Freedom. Between 1971 and 1973, Superstudio produced theoretical works, films and utopian designs: Cinque storie del Superstudio and Supersurface presented in 1972 at the MoMA in New York during the exhibition Italy: The New Domestic Landscape. In 1973 he was one of the founding members of Global Tools, chaired by Ettore Sottsass jr. In 1978, before the group dissolved, he participated in the Topologia e Morfogenesi exhibition at the Venice Biennale. Some recent tributes to the group are: Superstudio 50, exhibition curated by Gabriele Mastrigli, MAXXI Rome; Superstudio Migrazioni, CIVA Brussels [2020].

About the brand

"Poltronova is the radical factory. Poltronova is a historic moment, which is still alive and where many of us still feel at home. Where the glorious and long history of Italian design began among frogs and reeds, before reaching the altars of honour..."

Andrea Branzi Archizoom Associati.
