Whether served neat, on the rocks, or mixed into a cocktail, whisky is often considered the world’s greatest spirit. On paper it may seem like a simple concoction—water and grain, fermented by yeast and aged in wooden barrels—but whisky is much more than its physical ingredients. During the Middle Ages, Europeans called it aqua vitae, or “water of life,” a name that reflects the spirit’s cultural, social, and historical significance.

Housed in a wrought-iron-trimmed wooden box inspired by an authentic whiskey barrel, this addition to Assouline's bestselling Impossible Collection may well be its most notable volume published to date.

Complimentary white gloves and a signature canvas bag are included with every purchase of Assouline's Ultimate Collection.

More information

In The Impossible Collection of Whiskey, bestselling spirits writer Clay Risen unravels the history of whiskey and takes readers on a tour of some of the world’s most famous distilleries and their finest bottles. From the finest Scotch in the Scottish Highlands to the finest bourbon in Kentucky, Risen’s selection of 100 unrivaled whiskeys comes from both age-old makers and pioneers of the craft distilling movement that has spread across the globe. These whiskeys are selected not only for their exquisite flavor, but also for their rarity, age, aroma, and innovation. Bottles from countries with nascent whiskey markets, such as India and the Czech Republic, sit alongside old American classics like Pappy Van Winkle and some of the rarest and most coveted bottles on the market. Risen marvels at bottles like Ireland’s Midleton Very Rare 45 Year Old, the oldest and most expensive Irish whiskey in the world. Together, these 100 bottles make up a collection of whiskies so exclusive that no one could ever bring them all together under one roof. A must-have in any true whisky connoisseur’s library, The Impossible Collection of Whisky is a careful tribute to a spirit long revered as the “water of life.”

About the brand

Assouline, where culture meets luxury It all began in 1993, when Martine and Prosper Assouline found themselves at the La Colombe d'Or hotel in France, one of their most beloved places in the world. As they experienced its beauty together, their curiosity about life and love of books inspired them to make their own tome about the hotel. Prosper took the photos, Martine wrote the text, and La Colombe D'Or became their first book, published in 1994. Today, every Assouline book continues to be created with the same union of talent and passion: Martine's editorial direction and Prosper's creative vision.
