Sassi Gufram pouf

Designed by Piero Gilardi for Gufram in 1968 , it is a pouf upholstered in polyurethane foam, hand decorated with Guflac ® .

First exhibited at the Milan Triennale in 1968 , Sassi became one of the symbols of Gufram’s naturalistic inspirations and of the “true-fake” concept, which can be found in many of his products. The stones – the largest is a pouf, the smaller ones ornamental elements – are reproduced aesthetically faithfully, but lose their weight and known characteristics thanks to the use of a light material such as polyurethane. It is a tactile short circuit, which is an integral part of Gufram’s philosophy.

More information

Decontextualize: this is Piero Gilardi’s mantra. Recreating the bucolic atmosphere of a mountain river or ocean cliffs within the domestic space: this was his goal: to empty the weight of an object, but to let its image – or rather its artificial reproduction – retain the poetry and evocative simplicity from which these objects come to life for the user.

And so the Sassi series was born. Sedilsasso, the largest rock - to be used as a chair - is accompanied by two other smaller pebbles, which go together to recreate a natural contemplative ensemble.

About the designer

Piero Gilardi

Piero Gilardi was born in Turin in 1942 and studied at the School of Art and the Accademia Albertina in Turin.

A pioneer in the field of technological art, in the 1960s Gilardi was one of the protagonists of Nouveau Realisme and European Pop Art. In 1963 he held his first private exhibition, "Machines for the Future"; two years later he designed the first pieces in polyurethane foam for Gufram, and began to exhibit his works in various cultural centres around the world - including Paris, Brussels, Cologne, Hamburg, Amsterdam and New York.

From 1968 onwards he joined the new artistic trends of the time - Arte Povera, Land Art, Anti-form Art - and collaborated in the production of several international magazines.

About the brand

With its Radical Design spirit and non-conformist experimentation linked to aesthetic, technological and material research, Gufram has created seating and interior design icons that have entered the collective imagination: playful, subversive and desacralising products with a POP soul, deliberately conceived as anti-design items.
